Itinerary
Day 1 & 2: The Peruvian Amazon
For those travelers continuing on to the Peruvian Amazon, you will fly from Cuzco to Puerto Maldonado, instead of returning to Lima with the main group. Your Amazon adventure begins in an outboard motorized canoe navigating the Madre de Dios River to Hacienda Concepción, your rustic, chic jungle lodge for the next two nights.
With incredible biodiversity, the Amazon rainforest spans multiple South American countries with Peru having the second largest portion of the Amazon rainforest within its borders. For the next three days and two nights your expert naturalist guides will explain the rainforest’s uses and its relevance.
Madre de Dios is called the biodiversity capital of Peru and wildlife abounds. You will have the opportunity to trek through terra firma into the Tambopata National Reserve and navigate by dugout canoe across Lake Sandoval, a mirror-like oxbow lake. Adventurous souls can embark on a canopy walk, ascending a 98-foot tower to cross the seven hanging bridges connecting the treetops, a conservation project of ITA-Inkaterra Asociación. You may see the endangered giant river otter, blue and yellow macaw, red howler monkey, white-throated toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, squirrel monkeys, the three-toed sloth and more.
In the evenings, you will enjoy delicious meals prepared at the lodge. Nightfall in the Amazon rainforest gives way to nocturnal animals who display intriguing behavior. Their enhanced senses have adapted over time in this extraordinary environment and are fascinating to witness. You will have the opportunity to venture out with your guide on night excursions on foot and by outboard motorized canoe to explore the nocturnal living nature and listen to the night sounds that penetrate this hidden world.
